Soda lime
Soda lime is a mixture of NaOH and Ca(OH)2. It’s produced through the quenching of burnt lime with a solution of NaOH under strong heating. Soda lime is used as absorbent of carbon dioxide in several different applications where carbon dioxide in the exhaust air needs to be taken care. It’s used in submarines, for diving, in mines and ventilators.
The absorption of carbon dioxide in the gas stream (normally air) occurs in a base catalyzed exotherm reaction in two steps according the following:
CO2 + 2 NaOH → Na2CO3 + H2O
Na2CO3 + Ca(OH)2 → 2 NaOH + CaCO3
Our lime for carbone dioxide absorption is sold under the trade names Sofnolime and Sodasorb.
