Defoamer
Tradename: DefomStar®
A light foam is normally not problematic, but heavy foaming can often lead to different treatment problems. These problems can be instrument misreadings of parameters such as temperature, levels or density that can lead to wrong decisions and production loss. Foam is a gas dispersion in a liquid or solid phase. Foam is created by the tensides at the air/liquid interphase, therefore air bubbles appear and are stabilized by the tensides. Foaming can eventually give a bad impression on a customer on how a process is running. The presence of foam in effluent water can cause complaints from the local population and authorities even though the foam is harmless for people and the environment.
Oil based
In the products oil is used as the carrier molecule. It can be mineral oil, vegetable oil, technical white oil or other oil that is insoluable in the foaming media, except silicone oil. An oil based defoamer also contains a wax and/or a hydrofobized silicic acid. Typical waxes are ethylenbisstearamide (EBS), parafin wax, ester wax, fat alcohol wax. It can also be used in fatty acid with limited solubility as aluminium stearate, calcium stearate etc. Oil based defoamers are also often added to tensides to improve the emulsification and spreading of the foaming media. This type of defoamer are effective to eliminate surface foam.
The products are delivered in IBC, but can also be delivered in drums.
Water based
Waxes dispersed in water. The wax must be insoluble in the foaming liquid. Often the wax is equivalent to wax used in oil based defoamers. Water based defoamers are normally ventilators, which means that they are good at removing entrapped air.
The products are delivered in IBC, but can also be delivered in drums.
Silicone based
Defoamers with silicone mixture as active ingredient. The delivered liquid can be an oil or an emulsion. The silicone mixture is made up of a hydrofobized silicic acid dispersed in a silicone oil. The emulsifier is added to assure even dispersion of the silicone in the foaming media. Other common additives are silicone glycols and/or modified silicone liquids.
These are extra powerful defoamers with good efficiency on surface foam and entrapped air. Silicone based defoamers are also well suited for non water based (solvent based) applications like crude oil and oil refinery. For systems with especially poor solubility flouro silicones can have a good effect.
The products are delivered in IBC, but can also be delivered in drums.
EO/PO based
Contain EO/PO-copolymers. They are delivered as oils, aqueous solutions or water based emulsions. EO/PO-copolymers normally have good dispersing properties and are therefore often well suited for precipitation problems.
